Culpeper’s Impoliteness Strategies in Neil Simon’s ‘Biloxi Blues’

Impoliteness has recently been of interest to scholars as a linguistic study in the field pragmatics. It emerged opposite orientation politeness strategy, theory and studies. This paper explores how impoliteness strategies mapped out by Jonathan Culpeper (1996) are employed dramatic texts. examines Culpeper’s designed investigate face text. tests through Neil Simon’s Biloxi Blues (1985). comedy is used for three reasons: (1) drama, it mirror life real-life speech events; (2) provide resource analyse impolite interactions between characters dialogic discourse; (3) texts rich context interpret verbal non-verbal strategies. can cause disharmony conflict The exchanged analysed according five strategies: bald on record impoliteness, positive negative sarcasm or mock politeness, withhold politeness. employs descriptive qualitative method determine face-threatening acts incorporated into play line with propounded his article entitled Towards an Anatomy (1996). also react acts. In twelve selected extracts, seventeen cases ten eight four have observed. Moreover, observed that use taboo words abusive strong language. aggravated mainly abuses, sexual insults name-calling Racial slurs identified part impoliteness.
